Fleece because of its ability to retain warmth is used today for sleeping bag blankets, hats, pants, gloves and jackets. Fleece is warm, soft and can wick moisture away. Fleece jackets are perfect for wearing on their own like a sweater or underneath rain or wind jackets. Jackets designed to go over fleece are often called shells. Some shells are sold with removable fleece jackets - perfect for whitewater rafting.

Fleece jackets come in many colors and designs and some are even reversible. There are lightweight fleece jackets that are perfect for summer and heavier polar fleece sweaters for winter activities.

Fleece vests are also increasingly popular for both warm and colder temperatures. Fleece jackets with long sleeves that have a zipper are also available. Many of the fleece vests and jackets also contain zippered pockets and some have elastic waists to keep in heat. Fleece pullovers are also available and many come with a large pouch in the front. Fleece comes in different thickness for different temperatures and various levels of quality. Quality fleece will last longer and is less prone to pilling (or getting balls on it) than lower quality fleece is.
