Gear and Equipment

What you need out on the trails

Having the right gear and equipment before you set out on your Canadian Adventure could mean the difference between a cherished trip and a true Canadian nightmare.

Packing a backpack can take more planning than some may think but it is not that complicated. As you gain experience, it becomes easier.

Gear necessities include the clothing you will wear. Rain gear is necessary considering that you cannot predict the weather. Since Canada often has cold temperature even in summer, a nice warm fleece jacket should be stowed in your pack at all times.

The boots you wear are as important as the water you drink. Bad boots that offer limited to no foot protection can cause your hiking experience to go sour faster than mayonnaise in the sun.

And don't forget that first aid kit. Cuts scrapes and other injuries occur frequently on the trails. Stock it before leaving home and make sure it contains enough products for the entire trip.

Dry bags carry your equipment and help keep it dry when you are out canoeing or kayaking. They are especially good when white water rafting, as you will most defiantly get your things wet crashing down the rivers such as the ones found in Ottawa.

And remember to bring a life jacket if you plan to do any type of boating. Life jackets may just save your life if you fall overboard while out enjoying your favorite Canadian water sport.

If you plan to do some hiking, you may want to consider a hiking stick. Hiking sticks not only help you keep balance but also may help you continue longer and faster than footing it alone.

At night, you'll appreciate your sleeping pad. Getting a good night's sleep can mean the difference between a good day and a great day of outdoor activity. Keep your sleeping pad in a waterproof bag to keep it dry - nothing ruins a good night's sleep faster than a soggy mattress.

Of course your tent must be compact enough to fit in your bag if you plan on backpacking across some of the vast land Canada has in store for you - and don't forget those sunglasses. We may be the great white north but the sun shines bright here as well.
