Fly Fishing

Continuing a tradition

Fly fishing is the oldest form of sport fishing. Fly fishing attempts to catch fish with a near-weightless artificial lure known as a fly. This type of fishing is done either by standing in shallow water, or anchored or drifting on a boat. Anglers enjoy fly fishing because you don't have to change lures all the time.

Fishing with a fly can lure many types of fish. In particular, this method is effective for trout, who feast on aquatic insects, which the fly mimics.

Fly fishing in Canada has become hugely popular in recent years. Many Canadian companies now offer great deals for fly fishing trips. Vacations, charters, guide services and fly fishing equipment are now available to both the new and experienced fly fisher.

Fly fishing rods and reels will be needed for your trip. Automatic reels are used by many. On the end of the line you need a leader, which must be light and almost invisible, attached by knotting or 'no-knot' eyelets, which you can buy. Finally you need the fly itself. The goal is to imitate an insect; so different flies will work for different fish.

Fly fishing gear and equipment that you should have include: a fly fishing line, box, collection of flies, leaders, fly tying hooks, and tying tools and vices.

Anyone fly fishing in Canada should bring warm clothing, a lifejacket, waders, boots, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent and a small first aid kit. Many bring an emergency repair kit that includes material for patching waders, a sewing kit, waterproof glue, nylon thread, a spare tip ring and strong tape.
