Fly Fishing Equipment

The perfect gear for the perfect sport

Fly-fishing rods are normally constructed out of graphite, bamboo or fiberglass. Graphite fly rods are the most recent innovative technology and very popular (although often more expensive). Choosing a fly rod depends on what type of fish you seek, your type of action and experience, personal preference and of course your budget. There are thousands of choices of new, used and antique fly rods on line.

Fly fishing reels or spools work by holding the line and feeding the fly across the water so you can catch that big fish.

Leaders, which must be light and almost invisible, are on the end of the line attached by knotting or "no-knot" eyelets.

A fly itself is also needed. Not the real thing, a fly or a lure imitates an insect. Different flies will work for different fish.

Most people fly-fishing wear vests. A vest has many pockets of various sizes both inside and out so that you can easily store all of the important things you will need while fishing. Chest vests, fly packs or fanny packs are another great way to keep your gear handy and organized (and they can be used in all temperatures). Fly or fanny packs almost resemble backpacks that strap on. Items can be conveniently accessed as most packs sit on your chest.

Waders keep your legs dry and insulate you from chilly water and weather. Stocking foot waders don't have a boot attached, while the boot foot wader does. Waders today can be found made of neoprene and nylon and most recently Gore-Tex.

Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat are a must. Fly-fishing can be hot and the sun at anytime is damaging to the skin and eyes.
