Cross Country Skiing Trips in Canada
Glide across the country
Canada is cross-country skiing heaven. Canada offers beautiful winter scenery, diverse terrain and thousands of miles of trails within wilderness areas, parks and outdoor centers for you to explore on skis.
Unlike downhill skiing, cross-country skiing can be practiced anywhere and is an activity for every age and fitness level. It is easy to learn and its health benefits are unrivalled. Two skiing techniques are used in cross-country skiing: the classical style and the free-style skating technique.
Classical skiing is the traditional style, using a parallel gliding technique. The rhythm is the same as in running, except that the momentum carries you further than normal foot strides. Classical skiing keeps both skis parallel to the tracks and is the principal technique for off-track skiing, such as on forest trails.
Skating is a newer and faster style of cross-country skiing where the skier pushes laterally with the legs on the inside edge of the ski, similar to skating on blades. This 'free' style of skiing requires a wider trail groomed with tracks, such as those found at cross-country ski touring centers.
Cross-country or 'Nordic' skiing originated in Scandinavia. Canada's Herman 'Jackrabbit' Smith Johannsen from Québec is considered the father of cross-country skiing in Canada. Since its introduction, thousands have come to love this sport because it provides a vigorous workout while offering the pristine silence of Canada's winter.
What could be better than a cross-country skiing vacation for soaking in Canada's winter ambiance?
